On 16 January 2001, the Jessica ran aground in the Galapagos Islands, spilling about 5,000 tonnes of diesel and bunker oil, and threatening some of the world’s rarest coastal and marine animals, including birds, mammals and reptiles. Sea Alarm sent an expert team of three sea mammal specialists to the archipelago to assist local organisations with the wildlife rescue and rehabilitation activities.
