Wildlife response planning

Most coastal countries have an oil contingency plan. Few existing contingency plans include a section that explicitly deals with the planned response to oiled wildlife. Sea Alarm will assist those countries that are aiming to set up an effective oiled wildlife contingency plan. Sea Alarm will bring together the best available expertise to work with national parties in a process to develop a tailor made plan, if necessary.
Example: Sea Alarm assisted the development of a national oiled birds response plan in Belgium (see ACTIVITIES)

Assistance to national processes

The success of a response to an oiled wildlife incident is strongly dependant on the ability of national parties, such as the oil spill response authorities, the wildlife response authorities, wildlife responders and scientific institutes, to cooperate with each other under the stressful circumstances of a spill event. Being an independent and impartial outsider, Sea Alarm has developed some unique qualities to assist national parties to discuss forms of structural cooperation, and act as a professional moderator in a process which could eventually lead to an effective national oiled wildlife response plan which is agreed by all relevant parties.
Examples: Sea Alarm is currently involved in processes in the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Spain and Portugal. (see ACTIVITIES).

Training of oiled wildlife responders

In cooperation with other expert organisations, Sea Alarm develops training modules and organise training events on oiled wildlife care for local marine wildlife responders. Training events have been held in 2006 and 2007 and are aiming at creating a group of experienced oiled wildlife responders that are individually or as a group able to assist with an oiled wildlife response in any country.
